1964-P Kennedy Half-Dollars - Roll of 20

John Fitzgerald "Jack" Kennedy (May 29, 1917 – November 22, 1963), or simply JFK, served as the 35th President of the United States from January 1961 until his assassination in November 1963. In this short period he presided over significant events like the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, the establishment of the Peace Corps, developments in the Space Race, the building of the Berlin Wall, the Trade Expansion Act to lower tariffs, and the Civil Rights Movement. Regardless of the political divide between the Republican and Democratic parties, he is unanimously considered one of the greatest Presidents on our nation.

First minted in 1964, the Kennedy half dollar, is a fifty-cent coin that is currently issued by the United States Mint. It was authorized by Congress as a memorial soon after the untimely assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Adapting the works of Mint sculptors Gilroy Roberts (obverse) and Frank Gasparro (reverse), along with suggestions from the president’s widow Jackie Kennedy, the striking of the new coins began quickly in January 1964.

This coin had little circulation as collectors hoarded its early releases. In spite of increased production, rising silver prices continued the trend, and many were melted for their silver. Starting with the 1965-dated pieces, the percentage of fine silver was reduced from 90% to 40% (silver clad).

Circulation increased when in 1971 silver was eliminated entirely from the coin. In 1975 and 1976, the mint issued a special reverse designed for the United Stated Bicentennial. Over the years, other special collector coins were produced, such as the 2014 Kennedy half dollar in 99.99% gold.

At a premium through the Mint since 2002, Kennedy half dollars are mainly struck to satisfy the demand from collectors.
